OSCAR REACTION – THE SURPRISES & SNUBS!

The 90th Annual Academy Award nominations have been announced and there weren’t too many shocks…
here’s a breakdown of some of the categories…

BEST PICTURE
Call Me By Your Name
Darkest Hour
Dunkirk
Get Out
Lady Bird
Phantom Thread
The Post
The Shape of Water
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

SNUB – The Big Sick – At least it got a nomination for Original Screenplay, but the romantic comedy deserved more of an embrace from the Academy. It’s one of the best romantic comedies in years.
SURPRISE – Darkest Hour Phantom Thread. Not really surprised that they were nominated, but I didn’t think they would make the cut.
PHEW! – Wonder Woman. I know people loved this movie, but it’s not Oscar material. I’m glad it didn’t get nominated for Picture and I never expected it would, but they did leave it out of all the tech awards also which was surprising.
PHEW AGAIN! – Get Out. I called this a year ago that this movie was deserving of Oscar nominations. A film that came out last February and here we are a year later! I’m thrilled that it has received the attention if rightfully deserved.

BEST DIRECTOR
Dunkirk, Christopher Nolan
Get Out, Jordan Peele
Lady Bird, Greta Gerwig
Phantom Thread, Paul Thomas Anderson
The Shape of Water, Guillermo del Toro

SNUB – Martin McDonagh for Three Billboards deserved a directing nomination, but who would have to go? There’s just no room unfortunately. This isn’t good news for the film winning Best Picture without a directing nomination.
SURPRISE – Paul Thomas Anderson, Phantom Thread. I didn’t see that coming. The only movie nominated for Best Picture I still need to see.
PHEW! – Greta Gerwig and Jordan Peele! Absolutely deserving for their brilliant films!

BEST ACTRESS
Sally Hawkins, The Shape of Water
Frances McDormand, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
Margot Robbie, I, Tonya
Saoirse Ronan, Lady Bird
Meryl Streep, The Post

SNUB – Jessica Chastain, Molly’s Game. She was fantastic and the only reason she wasn’t nominated was Meryl took her spot.
SURPRISES – None
PHEW! – Margot Robbie, I’Tonya. If anyone was as risk of getting a shocking snub it was Margot. Thankfully she pulled it through for her incredible performance.

BEST ACTOR
Timothée Chalamet, Call Me By Your Name
Daniel Day-Lewis, Phantom Thread
Daniel Kaluuya, Get Out
Gary Oldman, Darkest Hour
Denzel Washington, Roman J. Israel, Esq.

SNUB – James Franco, The Disaster Artist. I’m not too shocked by this. The recent allegations that came out against him was exactly when the branch was voting.
SURPRISES – Denzel. Not a big surprise here, but has anyone seen this movie yet? The reviews weren’t amazing for it. I didn’t think it would make the cut. He can thank Franco for this one. Even though Denzel is always incredible, there’s no chance this year sorry.
PHEW! – Daniel Kaluuya, Get Out. I’m thrilled about this nomination! Absolutely deserving!

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Mary J. Blige, Mudbound
Allison Janney, I, Tonya
Lesley Manville, Phantom Thread
Laurie Metcalf, Lady Bird
Octavia Spencer, The Shape of Water

SNUB – Holly Hunter, The Big Sick. I didn’t think she would make the cut, but I had hoped.
SURPRISE – Lesley Manville, Phantom Thread. I had this gut feeling she would be nominated, surprise!
PHEW! – Laurie Metcalf, Lady Bird. Only because I think she is incredible and is my choice to win this if I could vote.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
Willem Dafoe, The Florida Project
Woody Harrelson, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
Richard Jenkins, The Shape of Water
Christopher Plummer, All the Money in the World
Sam Rockwell, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

SNUB – Armie Hammer, Call Me By Your Name. I’m shocked he didn’t get nominated. He really deserved it. I think this is the biggest snub of the year.
SURPRISE – Christopher Plummer, All the Money in the World. Not surprised he was nominated, but I thought it would have fallen through like the movie has.
PHEW! – Woody Harrelson, Three Billboards. I’m thrilled he was nominated and I suspected it, but I thought he may have gotten forgotten like at the Globes.

BEST ANIMATED FEATURE FILM
The Boss Baby
The Breadwinner
Coco
Ferdinand
Loving Vincent

SNUB – Nothing, this year has not been great for animated films.
SURPRISE – The Boss Baby. I didn’t really think this movie was that great to make this list, but here we are. Meh!
PHEW! – Ferdinand. I really enjoyed this movie so I’m happy it made the cut. I wasn’t expecting it would.
