They really don’t make them like this anymore. Some of my favourite comedies of all time came out in the 80’s and many of these classics came from John Hughes. They’re films that even today still work and are just as funny as they were back then.
Planes, Trains & Automobiles is celebrating it’s 30th Anniversary and wow does that make me feel old now. There’s a new blu-ray out celebrating the 30th Anniversary, however it’s just the same one that came out a few years ago. The only change they made was a slip cover and a 30th Anniversary sticker. It would have been nice to have this released on 4K with even more features, but for a comedy made in the 80’s I’m impressed with the supplements it does have, not many get this kind of treatment. It’s definitely worth having this movie in your collection.
Not like I need to give a synopsis of this because I hope everyone has seen this by now. Here I go anyway… Steve Martin plays a man struggling to get home before Thanksgiving, but along the way encounters numerous transportation issues. Along for the ride is Del Griffith (played by the absolutely brilliant late Candy) a stranger Martin meets along the way that causes even more misery on their travels.
I loved this movie back when I was a kid and still to this day it’s a yearly tradition watching this movie during the holidays. I can recite lines from this movie and not because I’ve seen it over and over, but because it’s so well written and absolutely hilarious. If you don’t enjoy this movie you have no soul.
Below I will leave you with a couple of my favourite lines from the movie, along with the scene from the film, but really this whole entire movie from start to finish is the best scene.
Thank you John Hughes, John Candy and Steve Martin for giving us such a brilliant and timeless classic movie. One of the all-time best and a holiday staple.
Neal: Del… Why did you kiss my ear?
Del: Why are you holding my hand?
Neal: [frowns] Where’s your other hand?
Del: Between two pillows…
Neal: Those aren’t pillows!
Del: You wanna hurt me? Go right ahead if it makes you feel any better. I’m an easy target. Yeah, you’re right, I talk too much. I also listen too much. I could be a cold-hearted cynic like you… but I don’t like to hurt people’s feelings. Well, you think what you want about me; I’m not changing. I like… I like me. My wife likes me. My customers like me. ‘Cause I’m the real article. What you see is what you get.
