It’s hard to believe A League of Their Own came out 25 years ago! July 1st 1992 to be exact. I remember seeing it in theatres when I was 14 years old. Ever since then it’s been an all time favourite comedy of mine. I have probably seen this movie 30 times and I’m still not sick of it.
Tom Hanks plays Jimmy Dugan, whose professional baseball days are numbered. He’s sent to coach the All-American Girls Baseball League of 1943 – while the male pros are at war. Geena Davis and Lori Petty play sisters playing on the same team. While the story may not be the strongest part of this film it’s the cast that holds it together and boosts the material.
A League of Their Own became an instant comedy classic when it became the surprise summer hit of that year. It’s the perfect blend of comedy and drama not to mention a terrific cast. Tom Hanks, Geena Davis, Madonna, Lori Petty, Rosie O’Donnell and more make up this hilarious and perfect cast. I have a feeling they’ll probably remake this movie in some form someday and it will never be as brilliant or beloved as this. Everything came together perfectly here.
I love that they’ve released a new blu-ray with new features and some recycled ones. More importantly… and this probably isn’t a big deal to most, but I’m happy to see the original movie poster on the cover art. Over the years this movie has been released on various formats in ugly packaging, but this one finally brings back the original poster. I know who cares, but for packaging obsessed collectors like me this is sweet!
A League of Their Own is a comedy classic! This deserves a re-watch every couple years.
