It’s that time of year again! Oscar time this Sunday! It’s also time for my predictions for the big night. Who will win and who should win. Enjoy the show Sunday night!

I’LL BE ANGRY IF THIS WINS – MANCHESTER BY THE SEA
La La Land is my favourite on this list and it’s definitely the frontrunner to take home the top prize. It’s not going to be everyone’s choice. It’s becoming quite a polarizing film for people, but I think it’s a stunning and brilliant film that Hollywood loves and THAT IS WHO VOTES… thank god! Can you imagine if they let viewers vote. Twilight would have won years ago. You don’t have to like their choices, but they are the ones in the industry who are celebrating each other. We’re just watching. So because Hollywood does love itself and watching movies about itself, then this is clearly the choice for them. Moonlight would be my runner up on this list which is actually a decent batch a movies and a fair competition for all.
BEST DIRECTOR
- Denis Villeneuve, ARRIVAL
- Mel Gibson, HACKSAW RIDGE
- Damien Chazelle, LA LA LAND
- Kenneth Lonergan, MANCHESTER BY THE SEA
- Barry Jenkins, MOONLIGHT
WHO WILL WIN – DAMIEN CHAZELLE, La La Land
WHO SHOULD WIN –DAMIEN CHAZELLE, La La Land
I’LL BE ANGRY IF THIS WINS –Kenneth Lonergan, Manchester by the Sea. I just wasn’t a fan of this movie.
Damien Chazelle has created an original musical film that is an amazing homage to the classic Hollywood musicals. He’s made a modern day classic. Plus he made Whiplash and that was my favourite film of that year. This guy is 2 for 2 for me.
BEST ACTOR
- CASEY AFFLECK
Manchester by the Sea - ANDREW GARFIELD
Hacksaw Ridge - RYAN GOSLING
La La Land - VIGGO MORTENSEN
Captain Fantastic - DENZEL WASHINGTON
Fences
WHO WILL WIN – DENZEL WASHINGTON, Fences / CASEY AFFLECK, Manchester by the Sea
WHO SHOULD WIN – VIGGO MORTENSEN, Captain Fantastic
I’LL BE ANGRY IF THIS WINS – None they are all deserving!
This is a tough category. It’s between Casey and Denzel with Denzel taking the slight lead. He’s won twice before so they may want to give it to Casey then, but then there’s that whole controversy which I don’t think should interfere with the voting, but it does. My choice would be cancel both and give it to Viggo because he’s absolutely superb in a terrific underrated film that didn’t get a lot of attention when it came out. Thankfully he got the nomination and that is the movie getting it’s justice.
BEST ACTRESS
- ISABELLE HUPPERT
Elle - RUTH NEGGA
Loving - NATALIE PORTMAN
Jackie - EMMA STONE
La La Land - MERYL STREEP
Florence Foster Jenkins
WHO WILL WIN – EMMA STONE, La La Land
WHO SHOULD WIN – EMMA STONE, La La Land
I’LL BE ANGRY IF THIS WINS – I love Meryl, but she’s taking a slot that Taraji P. Henson or Hailee Steinfeld should have been in.
This is Emma’s year. She’s simply amazing in this role. There is more emotion in the song she sings near the end of the film than anything I saw in Manchester by the Sea (I’m heartless I know). She shines and deserves the gold. In any other year this would have been Natalie’s. The only one that could steal it from Emma is Isabelle Huppert.
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
- MAHERSHALA ALI
Moonlight - JEFF BRIDGES
Hell or High Water - LUCAS HEDGES
Manchester by the Sea - DEV PATEL
Lion - MICHAEL SHANNON
Nocturnal Animals
WHO WILL WIN – MAHERSHALA ALI, Moonlight
WHO SHOULD WIN – MAHERSHALA ALI, Moonlight
I’LL BE ANGRY IF THIS WINS – I’m sorry it’s beat up on Manchester by the Sea by me, but Lucas Hedges.
Mahershala Ali 100% deserves this win! However this is a tough category. Jeff Bridges and Michael Shannon are equally incredible in terrific films, but are kind of cancelling each other out in similar roles. Moonlight is going to win some gold and this will be one of the categories.
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
- VIOLA DAVIS
Fences - NAOMIE HARRIS
Moonlight - NICOLE KIDMAN
Lion - OCTAVIA SPENCER
Hidden Figures - MICHELLE WILLIAMS
Manchester by the Sea
WHO WILL WIN – VIOLA DAVIS, Fences
WHO SHOULD WIN – VIOLA DAVIS, Fences
I’LL BE ANGRY IF THIS WINS – Nicole Kidman. She’s great in Lion, but it’s nothing new that we haven’t seen from her before. She’s not the standout in the film.
This is Viola’s year. She should have won it a couple years ago for The Help so this is going to be the Academy making up for that. Her biggest competition is from Naomie Harris, but I think she’s got the edge because she’s been winning at all the other award shows. Octavia has won before and it’s her co-stars that really deserved the nominations more.
BEST ANIMATED FEATURE
- KUBO & THE TWO STRINGS
- MOANA
- MY LIFE AS A ZUCCHINI
- THE RED TURTLE
- ZOOTOPIA
WHO WILL WIN – ZOOTOPIA
WHO SHOULD WIN – KUBO & THE TWO STRINGS
I’LL BE ANGRY IF THIS WINS – I think they are all deserving, I’m sure.
My heart lies with Kubo & the Two Strings this was hands down one of the best films of the year and it shouldn’t even be a question as to who is going to win this. Sadly it won’t. Zootopia has been winning all the awards and while it is a good movie, it’s not as memorable for me, Disney has done better.
BEST WRITING (ADAPTED SCREENPLAY)
- ARRIVAL
- FENCES
- HIDDEN FIGURE
- LION
- MOONLIGHT
WHO WILL WIN – MOONLIGHT
WHO SHOULD WIN – MOONLIGHT
I’LL BE ANGRY IF THIS WINS – These are all great choices I can’t argue any of these.
Moonlight has this. Barry Jenkins is going to win in the category for sure. It’s the Academy’s way of rewarding a film that really does deserve to be.
BEST WRITING (ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY)
- HELL OR HIGH WATER
- LA LA LAND
- THE LOBSTER
- MANCHESTER BY THE SEA
- 20TH CENTURY WOMEN
WHO WILL WIN – MANCHESTER BY THE SEA
WHO SHOULD WIN – LA LA LAND
I’LL BE ANGRY IF THIS WINS – The Lobster… No way. I will lose my mind. I did not care for this movie. It’s a great original idea so the nomination I completely understand, but there’s no way a film that gets 1 nomination for screenplay will win.
Unfortunately Manchester by the Sea is going to take this one. Another way for the Academy to split up the prizes which is what they’ve been doing a lot of over the last few years. La La Land is my choice because I loved the movie.
