I’m a fan of filmmaking duo Adam Wingard and Simon Barrett who’ve given us brilliant films like You’re Next and The Guest, but I have to say that I really, really didn’t like this. It’s basically about a woman who’s both a recovering alcoholic AND the ex-girlfriend of a serial killer who has just broken out of prison presumably to come gut her like a fish for putting him away.
She’s addicted to alcohol, he’s addicted to killing, blah blah… but the way it played out made it seem like her addiction issues were kind of an after thought, like “She didn’t know he was a killer ‘cause, err…she was drunk all the time. Yeah, that’s it!” And honestly the actress was SO BAD and there was no character development that I couldn’t have cared less about her or what was happening to her. I think she has something wrong with her sinuses and all I could think the entire movie was “Go blow your nose, bitch!”
These guys typically do a “But wait, there’s more!” kind of story twist in their films and that could’ve been interesting too but I think they just dropped the ball. If they had put more effort into developing the characters further it would’ve helped immensely and there would’ve been a real pay off. The camera work was also horrendous with so much rack focus I felt like I was back in film school.
If this was made by anyone other than these dudes I would probably shit ALL OVER it but I really like their recent stuff and they’re only getting better. I think this was only their second or third feature film so I’m willing to let it slide this time.
