I’m a big fan of post apocalyptic films, I love to see different people’s visions of what the world looks like once everything’s gone to shit. The Rover takes place 10 years after “the collapse” somewhere in rural Australia. I like that the collapse is never explained and because it’s set in an isolated place like the outback, you’re not sure whether this event affected the whole world or just where the story takes place.
This is basically a road movie with the main character trying to hunt down the men who stole his car. Guy Pearce is great as always and I have to say that Robert Pattinson surprised me; he’s actually a decent little actor!
The plot is very basic and the dialogue is minimal but impactful so I never wanted for more. I prefer this type of storytelling anyway, getting just enough to get my imagination working without beating me over the head with a message. This also means that when the action bits hit they’re very effective.
This is a great addition to the genre but I have to warn you that it’s a pretty depressing story overall, especially once you find out the main character’s motivations.
