Starring Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson, Hailee Steinfeld, Brittany Snow, Adam DeVine
2015 / 115 Minutes / Universal Pictures
I wasn’t a huge fan of the first one so I didn’t have many expectations coming into this. I certainly did not hate the first one… it’s a masterpiece next to this absolute mess. I, like everyone else, do enjoy the music in these movies, but music alone isn’t enough to sustain an interesting story and the worst part of this disappointing sequel is the terrible writing. This needed another pass on the script and someone who knows comedy. There were very few laughs and many uncomfortable and awkward moments where laughs were expected, but failed miserably. I found myself rolling my eyes and groaning way too many times. There were good moments, but then all of the sudden there would be some awful cringe worthy scene (‘We Belong’ sung by Rain Wilson and Adam DeVine was painful). Also, poor Anna Kendrick looks so bored in this movie… I’m ready to see her back in movies like Up In The Air and 50/50 and less in musicals.
I think there’s so much more potential here, but sadly it’s just a rehash sequel that will probably have you tapping your feet, but wishing you were laughing more. Bad overall and ultimately disappointing.
