Starring Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, James Corden, Anna Kendrick, Chris Pine, Johnny Depp
2014 / 125 Minutes / Walt Disney Pictures
This movie was not for me. Productions like this should just stay on a stage where they can be appreciated more. However, I do enjoy a good movie musical… when it’s done right. This sadly is not one of those cases.
It’s a disjointed, irritating mess of a movie that’s only real saving graces are Emily Blunt and Meryl Streep. I found Blunt to be the only real interesting character and storyline. I wanted more of her and less of the rest. The idea of this movie is clever and fun, but it’s all over the place and I found myself lost in what I was watching and what I was supposed to be thinking and feeling other that irritated and annoyed by obnoxious in your face music. The first half of this movie was somewhat working no matter how annoying little red riding hood is… but the last half completely falls apart into this stupid story that should have wrapped up long ago.
I wanted to like this more and there were moments I thought it was working, but then I was pulled into another direction despising it more and more. It felt much longer than it was and I would say about 20 minutes was actually fun and entertaining. The movie looks fantastic and it’s it’s visually impressive, but other then that I felt nothing more for this overbearing music.
